2010 August - P&G sponsor Olympics

LONDON (AP) -- The world's largest consumer products company signed on as a global Olympic sponsor Wednesday, the second multi-million-dollar marketing deal this month for the International Olympic Committee.

IOC president Jacques Rogge unveiled the 10-year agreement with American-based giant Procter & Gamble Co. at a news conference in London.

The deal was first reported by The Associated Press last week.

P&G becomes the 11th global sponsor of the 2012 London Olympics, matching the number from the previous cycle that covered the 2006 Turin Winter Games and 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

Cincinnati-based P&G also announced an extension of its Team USA sponsorship through 2020. The company was a U.S. Olympic sponsor for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games and was already committed to sponsoring the team in London.

2010 August - Finalists announched for National Business Awards

Over 150 of the UK's most innovative and resilient public and private sector businesses have been announced as finalists in the National Business Awards in partnership with Orange.

Organisations shortlisted this year range from the well-known - Unilever, Camelot, Marks & Spencer, American Express, Coca Cola, and The Co-Operative Group - through to the rising stars of Ella's Kitchen, Freesat, Coffee Nation, Naked Wines, Kwik Fit Financial Services and Cheapflights. 

The total number of organisations entering the National Business Awards in 2010 increased by over 40 percent compared to last year despite the challenging market conditions. From eco breweries to family-run medical recruitment companies, the diversity of the finalists is staggering, while competition for the big prizes is red hot.

2010 June - Denys Shortt congratulated by Prime Minister in PM Questions

Nadhim Zahawi MP- Would the Prime Minister join me in congratulating Denys Shortt of Stratford-upon-Avon for his nomination as Entrepreneur of the Year for Ernst & Young. A well-earned accolade, Prime Minister. Thinking about earnings, was the Prime Minister surprised that so many people in the public sector earn more than he does?

David Cameron PRIME MINISTER - I join my honourable friend congratulating the gentleman he refers to. On the issue of transparency on pay, I think this is an important principle. It's good for democracy, it's good for accountability to see how much people in the public sector are earning, and I also think it will help us to control public spending. When people see how much people are paid in the public sector, the pressure will be on to keep top pay levels down. And while saying that, I think it would be worthwhile and we are holding a review to get this done, to have a maximum multiple of 20 times earnings. You shouldn't have people at the top of a public sector organisation earning more than 20 times than people at the bottom. And it's going to be that sort of progressive idea that we're looking forward to putting forward on this side of the House.

Five business leaders from the West Midlands have been shortlisted as regional finalists in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards 2010.

The five are: Stuart Griffiths, chief executive, Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre Trust; Denys Shortt, chairman and chief executive, DCS Europe, based in Stratford upon Avon; Brian Davidson, chief executive, Geothermal International, based in Coventry; Mike Lord, chief executive, Minivator Group, based in Kingswinford; and Jim McCarthy, chief executive, Poundland, based in Willenhall. The five are among 112 companies shortlisted across the UK that will compete at regional award events in June
